It’s that time of year when New Year’s resolutions flood us, many fixating on fitness. Previously, we discussed things that impacts mental health in our region during this time of year. At Root to Rise, we propose a different approach—sustainable lifestyle shifts integrated into your daily, weekly, or monthly routine. Our goal is for you to step into the coming weeks feeling your best. Here are some of our ideas.

To combat the winter blues, I’ve set a personal rule: if it’s above 40 degrees and sunny, I walk, even if just to my mailbox. The joy of these walks on sunny winter days has become a ritual. Occasionally, I break my rule and still walk under 40 degrees, for which Confluence Running on Market Street provides excellent cold weather gear.

Consider joining a gym with a sauna. My rule here is simple: I can use the sauna if I’ve exercised for at least 20 minutes. Saunas, available at local gyms like Guthrie Healthworks and The Y in Corning, provide a warm internal boost. This rule works wonders; once I start exercising, I usually surpass the 20-minute mark. Share your experience with this trick!

For an enjoyable movement boost, solo dance parties are a favorite. Put on your favorite playlist, dance freely, and embrace the joy. Dance in front of a mirror for added fun and laughter. Trust me, it works wonders.

Prioritize rest. Exercise is beneficial, but adequate sleep is essential. Before adding anything new to your routine, prioritize sleep. Take a nap or set an alarm for a 10-20 minute “disco nap” for a refreshed body that positively influences every aspect of your life.

Lastly, consider finding a fitness buddy with compatible schedules. A neighbor who enjoys walking or a friend with similar goals provides accountability and companionship. Community support is invaluable.
